The ATEX Product Certification (or EU-Type Examination) is the verification of the design specification of a manufacturer’s product in relation to a series of relevant standards laid out under the directive.
ATEX certificates are issued only after conducting periodic surveillance of quality management systems. This certification process must be undertaken by an ATEX Notified Body (NB), to ensure validity when assigning product approval. The certification process includes testing the product to assess its compliance with the ATEX directive.
Typically, the NB tests only a small sample of products as part of any approval. In most cases, to enable the issue of an ATEX product certificate, a manufacturer will hold a valid Quality Assurance Notification (QAN). This allows for periodic audits and continued monitoring by qualified NB’s.
Some Notified Bodies and manufacturers have online ATEX certificate databases. However, unlike IECEx which only exists online, ATEX certificates can be available as paper copies, as well.
The IECEx “Online” Certificate of Conformity System issues IECEx Certificates of Conformity, covering Ex equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. IECEx Certificates of Conformity are issued by approved IECEx Certification Bodies (ExCBs).
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity attests that a sample of the Ex product, described on the Certificate, has been independently tested and found to comply with the international standards listed in the certificate. Though most practitioners are aware that all IECEx product certifications must be available online, paper copies of certification should be regarded with great caution.
